Everything You Need to Know About Herb Grinder Pieces

disassembled herb grinders with question marks

Are you in the market for a new herb grinder? If you have never owned a herb grinder or haven’t encountered the various sizes they come in, choosing a new herb grinder can be daunting. It doesn’t have to be confusing, there are three basic designs when it comes to herb grinders.

Two Piece

A two piece herb grinder is the most simple design, it involves a single chamber containing the teeth of the grinder. You place your herbs in there, put the lid on, spin the top piece of the herb grinder around a few times and Bang! your herbs will be ready. These will be the cheapest options for herb grinder designs, but you may be missing out on some of the more sophisticated features of other herb grinders.

Three Piece

In a three piece design, the grinding chamber contains small holes that allow grounds to escape once they have reached the desirable fineness. The third piece is in the bottom of the grinder and can then be removed to gain access to the finest grounds. This means the larger chunks of ground material will be separated from the finer particulate. If you require fine grounds for one use and larger chunks for another you’ll want at least a three piece herb grinder to separate them properly and easily.

Four Piece

The fourth piece often added to these designs is a net that divides the bottom chamber in two. This allows the user to separate their fine grounds into two groups depending on their size. This feature may not be important for everybody, but for the most particular of users, this feature will be invaluable. Allowing you to sort your herbs into sizes that will be perfect for any use you may have in mind. A four piece herb grinder will allow the user to access the finest available grinds which will give them the greatest result and satisfaction. For many four piece herb grinder designs the holes in the grinding chamber will be larger than those in a three piece herb grinder design, meaning only the largest chunks will be left in the grinding chamber.

The four piece herb grinders also come with a compartment in the bottom chamber to help you empty the chambers after use and clean the grinder once you’re done with it. You’ll pay slightly more for the extra pieces, but for just a small increase in price, you’ll get a more luxurious experience with your grind.

Five Piece And Beyond

There are larger grinders that have more pieces above four. These added pieces generally mean an extra mesh screen or an extra storage compartment. These grinders rarely change the game the same way as the differences between the two, three or four piece grinders. If you are in need of a place to keep your herbs then these can often be helpful but sometimes the extra pieces are unnecessary.

For many people, the simplicity of a durable two piece grinder is all you’ll need for a quality grind, but if you want a more lavish grind it's worth shelling out for the three or four piece grinders. The bonus utility they provide is hard to beat if you’re someone who likes to grind.
